During a period of restrained movement, silent fear and invisible walls, temporal barriers and solitude, the city became a place outside, detached from experience and projected under the hopes for another, future time. Stuttgart Sub Rosa is the picture of a city locked at home. A collage of voices speaks of an anxiety which is collective in its mechanism but personal in experience. Within others, Stuttgart Sub Rosa borrows the voice from Ottomar Dominick’s “Jonas”, which takes place in the cold post-war Stuttgart of 1957, and re-inserts it in the current pandemic situation. During a year of pandemic, the horizon points to a time of freedom afterwards. This horizon is detached into the future, while at the same time possessing a strong presence, due to the still well-alive memories of the time before and the strong will to get back out there after the crisis. Meanwhile, the Bahn Projekt Stuttgart Ulm, or Stuttgart 21, which had been initially planned to be fully finished by 2021, delays itself into the future years. Einundzwanzig (twenty-one) as a word and title has had a 10 yearlong presence in the collective imaginary of the city. The construction site is the physical manifestation of this horizon of a never- ending urban texture. In direct dialogue with Ottomar Domnick’s “Jonas” (Stuttgart, 1957) Stuttgart Sub Rosa paints a picture of a city that in changing, learned how to wait.
